What is a Well Rounded Hunting Dog?

For me a well rounded hunting dog will be born with the right hunting instincts to hunt, use its nose and will also be born to naturally hit the woods running and looking without any trainingwhen the pup goes into the woods alone, it is an indicator that he or she will have a certain amount of independence and I do like that type of pup to train and huntI also would like this pup or dog to honor a bay or strikeIm not a competition coon hunter otherwise I would want something different from my dog

The well rounded dog has the ability to find game whether the game is plentiful or scarce

In my minds eye this dogs ability to find game has a lot to do with a colder nose and a smarter brain and both are connectedthis connection is not the same in every dogits kind of like the trigger pull on a gunthe average dog doesnt click when the games scent is weak when hunting the above average dogs nose to brain triggers a response with a weaker game scent whether it is a track or scent in the windthe average dogs brain didnt trip so he keeps hunting until he gets the message to follow the scent in the wind or track and then warm it up until the game is located etcit has to be a stronger or hotter scent for this type of dog to eventually get on track for finding the game

The dog with the more sensitive nose to brain connection responds to a weaker scent quickly and warms it up pretty quickthis type of dog doesnt need to be hunted very much for it to produce gameof course hunting the dog two or 3 times a week is always better
Also, hunting the dog correctly to the best of our ability is key to having a great hunting dog

Dont take what I write as factI tend to operate off of personal experience and theory

In your minds eye what is your well rounded hunting dog?

I use the word, Balanced

I too like to see that 8 to 12 week old pup get out and check out different scents and obstacles. This will tell you if it has the drive and brains. I like a cold nose that opens when it smells coon and then again when it has it figured out. I DO NOT want to have to have a tracking system to tree a raccoon but the hound should tell me everything I need to know on whats happening. I want it to pack and if its the right game, take the track and run to catch. If its the second hound to the tree and it knows theres a raccoon there, tree its heart out. If theres a ruff dog at the tree, just back up and keep treeing. If that doesnt work I have no problem with it leaving. I will not feed one that fights. I want them to get out of the light but not the country and if they dont find a workable track, to check back in and well move. If I want to tree two miles away from where I dropped, I would just drive over there.

With some of the videos that are being put on social media, I would say that we may have 5 maybe 10 yers before hound hunting will be shut down. To those of you that feel the need to post and disrespect the game we pursue with your hounds, thanks

Brains
Nose
Voice
Personally
is what I want my tree hound or running hound to have

Well rounded ......a dog that can adapte to hunt in any hunting condition.....that takes "brains" .
Opens accordingly ....to the conditions dictated.
Moves it's tracks swiftly with minimum error.
Locates & trees intense ...no milling /no guessing.
Stays till I get there....
Does it's work to please me....
A well rounded dog can tree any type coon...
It's not a one way dog ..... multifaceted.
Can do it all, just cut M.....

I agreea good dog can hunt in any terrain that any other dog can and will look good doing itthis dog looks good in any company
